About Buxa Tiger Reserve

Buxa Tiger Reserve (BTR) is located in the Alipurduar sub-division of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal. Its northern edge borders Bhutan, with the Sinchula hill range stretching across this side. To the east, BTR shares its boundary with Assam, while National Highway 31C marks its southern border. As the easternmost part of the highly diverse North-East India, BTR represents the unique and ecologically rich Indo-Malayan region. The reserve is also part of the delicate Terai ecosystem. It is adjacent to Bhutan’s Phipsu Wildlife Sanctuary in the north and Manas National Park to the east, acting as a crucial corridor for elephant migration between India and Bhutan. Buxa Tiger Reserve hosts a variety of eight distinct forest types. Buxa Tiger Reserve, established in 1983, encompasses the entire forest area of the former Buxa Tiger Division along with parts of the adjacent Alipurduar Forest Division. In 1986, Buxa Wildlife Sanctuary was formed, covering 314.52 square kilometers of the reserve's forests. In 1991, an area of 54.47 square kilometers was incorporated into the Buxa Wildlife Sanctuary. The following year, in 1992, the Government of West Bengal announced its plan to establish a National Park within 117.10 square kilometers of the sanctuary. This plan was officially confirmed when the State Government declared the area as a National Park through notification No. 3403-For/11B-6/95, dated December 5, 1997.
