About RANGAROON

The name "Rangaroon" originates from the Lepcha language, meaning "Turning of the great river," a nod to the Rongdong river that winds around the area. Some locals also refer to the place as "Rai Gurung," incorporating common Nepali surnames—Rai and Gurung—found among residents.

Located southwest of Darjeeling town, the village of Rangaroon sits at an elevation of approximately 5,950 feet (1,812 meters). It’s visible from Darjeeling’s famous mall and can be reached on foot in about 3 to 4 hours. From Rangaroon, Darjeeling appears in the foreground, with Kanchenjunga providing a stunning backdrop, creating a picturesque scene. Roughly 12 kilometers away from Darjeeling, Rangaroon is a beautiful, offbeat destination celebrated for its untouched beauty and tea gardens. It also holds historical significance as the site of the first botanical garden in the hills, established in 1876.
